CHAPTER
THIRTEEN
TUCKER
The sun beat down on my forehead, and I squinted as I made my way to the bleachers. I scanned the area. The Barnacles practiced on the field, and the seats were mostly empty. A ball of pride swelled in my chest at the sight of the boys hard at work. They were my livelihood, my passion. I liked football a moderate amount, but I sought out the brotherhood and connection that came with it.
It was one of the things I had gotten to bond with Jordan over. He could never play because of his heart issues, so I had let him form the very first team of Barnacles, splurging to get his favorite players on the same roster. His giddy smile and excitement had been worth every penny.
I sat on one of the benches on the side. I had been thinking about Jordan a lot since my last session with Emma. I thought about him frequently as was, but the idea of opening up about him had never truly been on the table until recently. Still, talking so much about him the last time I was in her office had made me a nervous wreck. It was the most I had ever considered saying, but somehow, it had felt nice to get it off my chest. Despite having reservations about therapy, Emmaâs calm presence and eagerness to learn more about my past made me feel a warmth I hadnât felt in a while.
One thing led to another, and if I was not yet comfortable spilling to Emma, it might be worth it to spill to Carter instead.
I shot him a text. âWhere are you?â I typed.
I heard the ding coming from beside me and looked over to see Carter in his silly-looking florescent sun visor. I chuckled. He was the general manager of the Boston Barnacles, which meant he dealt with them a lot more than I did, hence the meeting during practice. I flagged him down with a simple wave, and he smiled as he spotted me.
âTucker, my man. Whereâve you been?â Carter jogged over, and I stood up to greet him.
He was on the shorter side, a gentle little guy with a whole lot of muscle to make up for it. I used to tease him about it in college whenever he whined about his height. He never believed me when I told him that he was the more popular of us two, regardless of his height. Carter was always the more outgoing, gentle one. He taught me kindness when I was nothing but a carbon copy of my father. I owe him eternally for it. It made sense that he would be the one to direct me to therapy.
âTherapy, actually, and at home,â I replied, settling back down on the wooden bench. These things have always been uncomfortable.
âHowâs that going?â Carter asked, eager and gentle as always, and I couldnât bear to shoot down his hopes.
I stammered, not knowing where to start. âWell, I hooked up with my therapist, Emma.
